Slack vs Teams for a small team, which one actually makes work easier?

16
We are a 12-person company deciding between Slack and Microsoft Teams and going in circles. We do not use much of the Microsoft ecosystem yet but might. For people who have actually run both day to day, which is genuinely nicer to work in, and what is the catch with each?

Honest split: Slack is the nicer chat experience, faster, cleaner, better integrations and search, and people enjoy using it. Teams wins on bundling, if you already pay for Microsoft 365 it is effectively free and its meetings + Office integration are strong. For a 12-person team not yet deep in Microsoft, Slack usually feels better day to day. The catch: Slack's free tier limits message history, and Teams can feel heavier.

Ran both. Teams is 'good enough and already paid for', Slack is 'people actually like opening it'. For a small team that usability difference is real, we were more responsive on Slack.

One practical point: if your clients or partners live on one of them, matching them can matter more than features, since guest access and calls are smoother within the same platform.

Whichever you pick, you will juggle it with your other chat apps anyway. I keep Slack in a unified desktop inbox with WhatsApp and email so work does not live in yet another separate window.
