How do you actually delete a Telegram account for good, not just log out?

I want my Telegram gone, not just the app removed from my phone. I have heard the account keeps existing on their servers unless you do something specific. What is the real way to fully delete a Telegram account, and does it wipe my messages and the groups I made?

Telegram deletion is done on their website, not in the app. Go to my.telegram.org/deactivate (newer app versions also have a Delete My Account shortcut in Settings), enter your number, confirm, and the account plus its messages and contacts are removed. There is also an auto-delete: Settings > Privacy and Security > Delete my account if away, which you can set to as short as 1 month of inactivity.

Worth knowing what deletion does to groups: your account leaves everything, and any group or channel you created keeps existing if others are in it, ownership just passes on. Your one-to-one messages are removed from both sides.

Just logging out is not the same as delete, that is the trap. Logging out on your phone leaves the account fully alive. Use the deactivation page for a real delete.

Heads up: deletion on that page is immediate and irreversible, no grace period. Export anything you want first via Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram data.
