Want a solid messaging app for Android that Meta does not own

31
Trying to cut Meta out of my life. What is good on Android that is not WhatsApp or Messenger?

Signal (nonprofit), Telegram (huge, fast, not private by default though), or Session if you want zero phone number. Signal is the one I would move friends and family to, it is the closest to a drop-in replacement.

Did this hold up long term, or does it come back after a reboot?Otto Engel 13mo ago

One thing to add: update the app first, half of these issues are just old builds.

Worth checking your notification settings too, they quietly reset after big updates.

Depends what you value. Signal for privacy, Telegram for big groups and channels, Matrix/Element if you like the idea of an open protocol you can even self host. All three are off the Meta grid.

Restarting the phone entirely did it for me when nothing else worked.
