How do I set a virtual background on Zoom, and why is mine greyed out?

Trying to hide my messy room on Zoom calls. I found the virtual background setting but half the options are greyed out, or it says my computer does not support it. How do I actually get a virtual background working, and do I really need a green screen?

Settings > Background & Effects (older versions: Virtual Background), then pick an image or add your own. If options are greyed out or it demands a green screen, it is almost always one of: an older/low-spec computer that cannot do background segmentation without a physical green screen, an out-of-date Zoom (update it), or the feature disabled in your account's web settings by an admin. On a supported machine you do not need a green screen.

Nine times out of ten 'greyed out' means your CPU does not meet Zoom's requirement for backgrounds without a green screen. Updating helps sometimes, but on older laptops a real green sheet is the fix.

Also check zoom.us web settings > In Meeting (Advanced) > Virtual Background is on for your account. If an admin turned it off, the app option disappears entirely.

Good lighting matters more than people think. Backgrounds look terrible and eat your shoulders in a dim room even on a capable machine.
