Best way to use Messenger on a Windows PC now that the desktop app is gone?

The standalone Windows app got pulled. I just want to chat from my desktop without keeping a browser tab open all day.

Messenger lives at messenger.com in a browser now. To make it feel like an app, open it in Chrome or Edge and use Install this site as an app from the menu, you get a proper window and taskbar icon. If you run several chat apps, a unified desktop app that holds them all in tabs saves the tab juggling.

The web version is the official route. If you are like me and also have WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram open, I moved them all into Spanbox so they sit in one window with one unread list instead of five separate tabs. Free for a few apps and it is local on your machine.
