Not constantly. Since WhatsApp's multi-device update, a linked device like Spanbox keeps working even when your phone is offline for a stretch. You only need the phone to first link it by scanning the QR, after that the Spanbox session runs on its own for a good while before it asks you to reconnect the phone.
