Started genuinely relying on Instagram DMs for important conversations and it hit me, if I dropped my phone in a lake tomorrow, would those messages be gone? Are they backed up to the cloud like WhatsApp, or tied to the device?

Is my Instagram DM history backed up anywhere, or would I lose it all if I lost my phone?

Good news: Instagram DMs live on Instagram's servers, not on your phone, so losing the device doesn't lose the messages. Log into your account on any phone or the web and your whole DM history is right there, it's account-tied, not device-tied. If you want your own copy for the record, use Settings > Your activity > Download your information to export them as a file you keep offline.

Solved the same thing by switching between wifi and mobile data, oddly enough.

This is exactly why I keep the important-conversation apps in one desktop inbox, so my 'archive' isn't sitting on a single phone that could take a swim. Nice peace of mind.
