On a Mac and all I can find is the browser. Was there ever a native Mac app?

No official Mac app anymore. I keep Messenger plus my other chats in a single desktop wrapper (Spanbox) so I am not living in browser tabs, but the plain answer is: use messenger.com and pin it.

Not the answer you want to hear, but sometimes it really is just their servers.

One thing to add: update the app first, half of these issues are just old builds.

There is no current native Mac Messenger app, it is the web version at messenger.com. You can turn that into a windowed app using Safari's Add to Dock or Chrome's Install site as app, which is the closest thing to native.
