How can I tell if someone blocked me on Instagram versus just deactivating?

A friend's profile suddenly shows no posts and I can't find them in search. Did they block me, or did they delete their account? Is there a way to tell the difference without being weird about it?

Quick test: search for them from a different account, or ask a mutual to check. If their profile shows up normally for others but not for you, you're blocked. If it's gone for everyone, they deactivated or deleted. Another block sign: your old DM thread stays but their name goes un-clickable and their photo greys out.

For what it is worth, the same trick works on the tablet version too.Grace Weber 2d ago
Worth noting it can reset after a big update, so keep half an eye on it.Greta Chen 2d ago

Fully closing and reopening the app (swipe it away) fixes more than you would think.

I keep all this stuff in one desktop window now, honestly makes these problems easier to spot.

One thing to add: update the app first, half of these issues are just old builds.

Clear space on the phone first, a lot of these apps misbehave when storage is nearly full.

For what it's worth, deactivating is really common and usually has nothing to do with you. People take breaks. Try not to spiral before you actually know.
