How do I quietly mute someone on Instagram without unfollowing or blocking them?

There's someone I don't want to unfollow, it'd be awkward since we know each other in real life, but their posts and stories are a lot. Can I mute them so they never find out, and does muting cover both posts and stories?

Yes, and it's completely invisible to them. Go to their profile > tap 'Following' > Mute, and you can toggle Posts and Stories separately. They get zero notification, no way to tell. It's the polite person's superpower: you stay 'friends' and your feed gets its peace back.
