How do I turn off SOS on my iPhone? The status bar just says 'SOS' and I can't call or text.

My iPhone's signal area shows 'SOS' or 'SOS only' and I can't make normal calls or use data. How do I get rid of it and back to normal service?

'SOS' in the status bar isn't a setting you toggle, it means your phone has no signal from your own carrier and can only make emergency calls. It usually clears itself when you're back in coverage. To force it: toggle Airplane Mode on for ten seconds then off (Control Center), which makes the phone re-find the network. If it sticks: restart the phone, check Settings > Cellular that your line and data are on, make sure carrier settings are updated (Settings > General > About, it prompts if there's an update), and reseat the SIM. If it never leaves even in good signal, it's usually a carrier or SIM issue, contact your provider.

It's not a button you switch off, SOS means no carrier signal so only emergency calls work. Nine times out of ten you've just lost coverage and it clears when signal returns.

Quick fix that usually works: Airplane Mode on, wait ten seconds, off. Forces the iPhone to reconnect to the network and the SOS clears. A restart does the same job.

If it's permanent even with full bars, check the SIM (take it out and reseat it) and your carrier account. Sometimes an eSIM or billing issue leaves you stuck on SOS and only the carrier can fix it.
